Managed Pressure Drilling - Operational Considerations

MPD Planning
Planning meetings should provide information about:
  • Casing design
  • Mud program
  • Hydraulics analyses
  • Well plan
  • Pressure profiles through the applicable hole sections
  • Rig equipment specifications and layout
  • Rig / well data acquisition and communication
  • Drilling tools specifications
  • MPD system and RCD specifications and functionality
  • HSE case reviews
  • HAZID / HAZOP
  • Preliminary operational procedures
  • Crew training
  • Rig-site & operational support
  • Regulatory issues
  • Rig site objectives, schedule, results, and actions

Getting ready for managed pressure drilling with a closed circulation system requires careful planning and preparation.

MPD planning should start with one or a series of orientation meetings to review and plan actions and contingencies for every phase of the operation. Some of these will be concurrent and without a doubt none should be overlooked.

Like other drilling operations, managed pressure drilling carries risks. Drilling a well under pressure raises the importance of safety and reliability to new levels. For this reason, MPD planning and preparation should start early with a review of:

Risks at every stage of the MPD operation
Plans to mitigate those risks
Contingency action plans in the event preventative actions fail

Planning and preparation for MPD operations should include a review of the:

1. Value proposition - quantify the value that MPD will deliver and include a number of strong economic drivers

2. MPD equipment and rig compatibility

3. Drilling hydraulics - an essential part of drilling and well design but critical for MPD applications

4. Personnel Training

5. Procedures - develop procedures for every major phase of the particular MPD operations which should include the following:
