Case History - Redevelopment Drilling

A better way to redevelop deepwater depleted field

Location: Gulf of Mexico

Operator improves drilling efficiency and gains access to previously undrillable reservoir targets

Challenges

  • Production induced pore pressure depletion and fracture gradient reduction
  • High mud weight is still needed for wellbore stability → High ECD
  • Narrow margin exists between wellbore stability and fracture gradient → Lost circulation
  • Narrow margin has lead to high percentage of NPT → 25% of operating time
  • Proven reserves are conventionally unrecoverable → In the range of 100 MMboe

Solution

  • Optimize drilling by analyzing and modeling wellbore hydraulics
  • Reduce the static mud weight below pore pressure to rediuce the ECD
  • Manage pressure while drilling with the Dynamic Annular Pressure Control system
  • Reconfigure riser for closed circulation drilling with the HOLD 2500 RCD
  • Perform HAZID / HAZOP workshops and train rig personnel

Results

  • Five wells have been successfully drilled and reached previously undrillable targets
  • Drilled with reduced mud weight was and increased flow rate
  • Lower ECD eliminated and pressure control eliminated lost circulation
  • Pressure stability eliminated wellbore stability events
  • Drilling cost and non-productive time were significantly reduced
  • The BHP was held in +/- 0.2 to 0.3 ppg window 95% to 97% of all pump cycles
